The title of the conference is 'Higher education for students with disabilities: ensuring compliance with the UN Convention'.

Higher education for students with disabilities: ensuring compliance with the UN Convention

The UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities entered into force in the Netherlands on 14 July 2016. Institutions in higher education are working on the implementation of this treaty. Held in the beautiful historical city of Utrecht, the conference explores possibilities to make education more inclusive, featuring a programme full of inspiring speakers, workshops and networking opportunities.

Handicap + studie, the Dutch expert centre for studying with disabilities, supports educational institutions in making their education more inclusive for students with a disability. LINK is a network of organisations, educational institutions, disability professionals, academics, students and interested individuals from all over Europe who share the same ultimate goal: the full inclusion of students with a disability in higher education.

Background

The UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities is currently being implemented by institutions in all countries that have ratified the convention. The three main principles of the convention are inclusion, full participation and autonomy, and the key motto is: 'Nothing about us, without us'. The higher education sector is experiencing a growing demand for innovation and flexibility. Sharing solutions will have a positive impact on the quality and inclusiveness of higher education institutions, especially for students with a disability.

The conference topics include

+ Provision of information
+ Accessible assessment and examination
+ The transition from education to the labour market
+ Making education more flexible
+ Policy development, implementation and monitoring
+ Student participation, peer-to-peer coaching
+ Student wellbeing
+ The use of personal and practical experience within education

The benefits for participants

Focus on the future with colleagues from higher education and other educational domains. Gain inspiration during workshops and presentations. Meet colleagues from the Netherlands and abroad and talk to students, board members and politicians. Attending the conference will enable you to take concrete steps to keep this subject on the agenda and to continue working on inclusive education within your own institution. Ultimately, this will benefit your students with a disability, helping them to study successfully and prepare for the labour market.
